Ultimate Sorrento and Amalfi Coast
Depart from Naples and the cruise port and set off for a day-long adventure like no other. From the scenic Bay of Naples leave on the world-famous coastal road with hairpin bends and travel the winding and jaw-dropping panoramic Amalfi coast drive making your way first to serene Sorrento, approximately 1.5 hours south of Naples' urban intensity. This small group tour keeps the number of guests limited to no more than 20 people to allow for a very special and intimate day.
Arrive at Sorrento and immediately be in awe of her beauty, standing on a terrace that increases rapidly above the sea on one of the most spectacular points of the Campania coast. Wedged on this ledge between the mountains and the Mediterranean, this attractive resort town is a must-do for vacationers in the region. Due to its location and mild climate, Sorrento had been favored as a place of choice by ancient Romans. Spend approximately 1-hour in Sorrento and discover for yourself a most pleasant place to stroll and admire what the locals have gone out of their way to create in a completely safe and relaxed place for tourists. Interjected with lemon and olive groves, this gateway to the Amalfi Coast has an unspoiled old quarter, a lively main shopping street, and the most spectacular cliffside setting.
Continue from Sorrento along the spectacular narrow coastal highway to Positano, an approximately 1-hour drive, located in the middle of the Amalfi coast. Like the legendary Sirens of Li Galli, this scenic locale never fails to seduce her travelers. From the sea, Positano is set in a dramatic vertical panorama of colors with green from the Monti Lattari to white, pink, and yellow Mediterranean houses. The Ancient Romans built numerous, lavish villas on the coast here, the ruins of which can be seen in the vicinity of the Church dell 'Assunta. The majolica tiled dome of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta can be seen from every corner of the town. A Byzantine-inspired Icon of a black Madonna, dating to the 18th century, is conserved inside the church. After the road united the town with Sorrento and Naples, the first tourists reached Positano, but these were no ordinary tourists, but rather an elite group of travelers comprised of intellectuals, artists, and celebrities who, from the early 20th century onwards, elected Positano as their preferred holiday resort. Positano is ideal for shopping so spend approximately 1 hour here and stroll the quaint and ancient streets to explore and find unique treasures and souvenirs.
Next up, you will travel from Positano to Amalfi, the town the coastal drive has been named after. This beautiful and graceful place is known for clusters of white buildings that shine like a pearl in the strand of towns looped along the Amalfi coast. After an approximately 1-hour drive, arrive at one of the more level towns and discover how it rambles up the hillside from the water instead of clinging precariously to it like some of the other famous destinations, making it easier to walk. One of the most historic towns along the Amalfi Coast, Amalfi had a glorious history as a maritime republic whose status joined the ranks of coastal powerhouses like Pisa, Venice, and Genoa. This prestigious town preserves important evidence from the cathedral dedicated to St. Andrew which dominates the homonymous square from the top of a staircase and intricate alleyways of white houses perched on one another. Spend approximately 1 hour here and discover the primary product is enormous orbs of lemons, picked fresh to make limoncello liqueur and used in local dishes as well. The lemon motif shows up in regional ceramics and a citrus scent fills the air as you meander about.
Lastly, and to round out this most extraordinary day, leave Amalfi and travel to Ravello, a short 15-minute drive away. Located between the most precious gems of the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is famous for its tranquil atmosphere and panoramic views. This hidden treasure with villas and gardens has been named the City of Music and is home to the Villa Cimbrone, Villa Rufolo, the striking Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium, and a vibrant cultural scene. With thousands of years of history, this enchanting mountaintop setting has enthralled countless visitors, inspired artists, and fulfilled passion in others. There are still chapters yet to be written along her medieval streets, in garden villas, and along ancient stone paths. After approximately 1-hour here it will be time to return to Naples and your cruise ship.
Don't miss this chance to spend your day leisurely visiting these gems of the Amalfi Coast!
Please note: A new provision law states only small vehicles (with 8 passenger max per vehicle) are permitted to park in Amalfi. Large groups of 9 or more guests will be split into separate vehicles. Due the traffic condition and in order to guarantee the last boarding, the itinerary may undergo variations, reducing the visit to the towns to 3 and guaranteeing short panoramic stops along the route. Feel free to agree with your driver the best itinerary for you!
