Island Tour with Brimstone Hill and Lunch

The scenic West Indies island of St. Kitts is the larger of two Caribbean islands that comprise the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Home to mountains that hold rain forests, beaches of white, gray and black sand and Georgian style buildings from the colonial area that were once sugar plantations, this island is a treasure-trove of things to explore.

On its southwestern coast is the capital, Basseterre, where you will first see the Circus, a plaza modeled after London's Piccadilly Circus, complete with Victorian-style clock tower. With your tour guide, set off from the port for an approximately 20-minute scenic drive to Basseterre.

Along the way, you will pass the Berkeley Memorial, and Independence Square (formerly Pall Mall Square) while listening to your guide explain the island's complex history. Since 1750, Independence Square was the center of government and business. In fact, as you will hear, African slaves were housed nearby and traded in the square until it was outlawed in the 19th-century. Drive past the War Memorial dedicated to remembering those servicemen who gave their lives in the World Wars and now a nesting site for egrets. See Bloody Point and on to the coast for the Carving of De Rocks, but not before passing some of the other historic city's prime landmarks.

Drive to the historical Wingfield Estate, an old sugar plantation dating to the 1700s and have time here to explore while learning of the importance of sugar production to this region. Make your way through the beautiful, lush rainforest and on to the scenic Romney Manor, another 17th-century sugar plantation. Have approximately 30 minutes to walk through the lovely botanical gardens and visit Caribelle Batik (entrance fee included in tour price), which produces high-quality crafts made in the traditional batik style for you to admire or purchase as a souvenir.

Following Caribelle Batik, you will soon arrive at Brimstone Hill Fortress (entrance fee included in tour price) approximately 20 minutes ride away. This Fortress was built in the 1600's by the British to defend the island, and now converted into a museum. You will have time here to explore, take pictures, and embrace all the amazing sights this historic landmark provides.

Your final stop will be to Timothy Hill located on the South East Peninsula, where the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea meet. Stop and enjoy a traditional Kittitian lunch at one of the popular beach restaurants/bars (vegetarian meal options are available).

Please Note: This tour includes the entrance fee needed for Caribelle Batik. Wheelchairs may be accommodated with advance notice for an additional fee of $25 US (not included), which is paid directly to the local representative before the tour departs.
