Private Moorish Malaga
Malaga offers so much if you want to sample the true Andalusian experience, discover this unhurried, vibrant city, which is rich in both culture and climate. Open your eyes to this corner of Spain with fresh eyes, and you will be both rewarded and enchanted. Situated in a stunning location on the Mediterranean, almost entirely surrounded by dramatic mountains. The Moors certainly left their mark on this city, as they did on most of this part of Spain.
Meet your knowledgeable, local guide directly at the terminal gate and board your private, comfortable coach for a scenic tour of Malaga. See the lighthouse, Malaga's main districts including El Limonar and La Malagueta, Reding Avenue, La Alameda principal and the Bullring.
Your coach will take you up the Montes de Malaga mountain range to reach the Gibralfaro Castle, a 10th century Moorish fortress (exterior visit only). Embrace the stunning panoramic view of the city from the Parador mirador located nearby. Just below, you can see what's said to be the oldest building in Malaga, the Roman theatre. There is evidence that this historic monument is, incredibly, as old as the 1st century. This was only discovered and restored in recent times, about 50 years ago.
Continue your scenic exploration and stop to visit the Alcazaba. The 11th century citadel is ranked as one of the main Moorish masterpiece in the peninsula. Its patios, gardens and pools are extremely well preserved and you will be amazed by its interiors. This imposing castle overlooks the city from high on the eastern hillside beside the Mediterranean. This amazing fortress was originally intended to defend the city from pirates, and it's a stunning spot surrounded by lush palms and pine trees is worth the trip up the hill for the breathtaking views alone.
Your next step will take you to the Cathedral of Malaga. A former Mosque, it boasts multiple chapels where lavish artwork is on display. A stone's throw away from the nearby Plaza del Obispo, the cathedral is a hodgepodge of architectural styles, across many centuries and even religions. This Catholic church leans slightly and even appears not to have been fully completed.
From here, your walking tour will start. Follow your guide to the historical center and see Malaga's main landmarks including the Roman Theatre, Calle Alcazabilla, the Alameda del Parque, Malaga Cathedral, Plaza de la Merced, Calle Granada, Picasso's birthplace, the Church of Santiago, Buenavista Palace, Plaza de la Constitucion, Calle Larios and the popular Atarazanas market.
Your tour will end in the Malaga historical center where you can enjoy some free time for independent exploration before returning to your ship.
